WASHINGTON, D.C. – We are now in the fourth day of the Israel-Hammas conflict. The President briefly addressed the nation about how the US is responding and reinforcing that the US stands alongside Israel. WZMQ 19 News spoke with Rep. Jack Bergman (R- MI) on the crisis.
Bergman told us he is horrified about the growing deaths of innocent civilians, which include at least 14 Americans so far and the hostage situation. With his background in the military and on the House Armed Services Committee, Rep. Bergman is getting briefed on some of the details but is waiting for a more formalized briefs on the situation there.
As we still see the conflict continue between Israel and Hammas, Bergman said the world is watching how allies respond to this situation. Over the weekend the Secretary of Defense announced the US is bolstering their posture in the region to help with deterrence efforts by sending weapons and a warship to the eastern Mediterranean area. Bergman cautions to be careful moving ships into a small space like the Mediterranean where they could be vulnerable. The UP Congressman said he is concerned the Biden administration is not showing enough strength on foreign policy.
Overall, he said he wants to continue supporting Israelis through weapons and intelligence and is horrified about the attacks on innocent civilians.
“It’s not enough to say our hearts go out but I’m going to say more definitively: we stand with Israel unequivocally 100 percent,” said Rep. Bergman. “And we will not quit, we as the United States, on Israel nor our other partners in the worldwide when this kind of inhumane, animalistic behavior occurs. This is just so wrong on all accounts.”
The big question Bergman now wants answered is: what failed? He wants to know how, as part of the international community, how we missed the signs of this attack before it happened.
