GLADSTONE, Mich. (WZMQ) – This weekend, an organization is hosting an event in Gladstone to raise awareness about cancer.
Pink Pumpkin of Delta County was founded twelve years ago by cancer survivors. The group sends financial assistance to families facing a diagnosis.
“After I had gone through breast cancer, we decided we wanted to help the people of the area,” said board member Joy McKnight. “The money we send is, obviously, never enough for a family going through that, but we just want them to know that Delta County supports them and they’re not alone.”
On Saturday, October 7, the annual Pink Pumpkin 5k will take place along the lakeshore. Participants can run or walk as much of the route as they want.
Attendees can also support those fighting cancer through bucket raffles or by purchasing a pink pumpkin in their honor.
“A lot of times when you find someone you know—someone you love—has got cancer, you don’t know what to do,” McKnight said. “This gives them an opportunity to donate to the cause, and every dollar that comes in to Pink Pumpkin is returned to the community.”
The Pink Pumpkin 5k begins at 10:00 a.m. at the East End Gladstone Pavilion by Van Cleve Park. Registration begins at 9:00 a.m.
