MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – Northern Michigan University previewed the upcoming school year during the college’s convocation ceremony Wednesday morning.
NMU President Brock Tessman gave remark’s alongside leaders from the student body and faculty. All of the speakers talked about projects and expansions to NMUs campus over the summer.
Highlighted was the school being the 17th in the nation to sign the Okanagan charter. The charter is an international agreement to promote the health of students, staff, and surrounding communities of colleges and universities.
“This is an opportunity for us to gain perspective, to start looking at things from a positive aspect, instead of the negative,” remarked Jaime Crabb, the Chair of Northerns Academic Senate.
The new school year is bringing the largest freshman class in recent history to campus, according to an NMU spokesperson enrollment is up 10% at the college. On campus housing is currently at 100% capacity with a waiting list. Tessman stated that the school is heading towards stabilizing its enrollment number, a milestone the University has been working towards.
Tessman also highlighted projects the university has been working on over the summer.
“We have got a great season of Wildcat athletics ahead, we have a number of new buildings that were dedicating, I’m most excited about getting to work and making sure we continue to promote student success,” added Tessman.
Northerns first day of classes is on Monday August 28th.
