Iron Mountain High School YAC club energized by summer conference

IRON MOUNTAIN, Mich. (WZMQ) – In a prelude to the upcoming school year, the students of Iron Mountain High School took the initiative to participate in various clubs and organizations, demonstrating an eagerness to engage even before the first day of classes with booths for various clubs and organizations stationed at last week’s back-to-school Navigating the Terrain event.

The student body of Iron Mountain established informative booths for incoming students to familiarize themselves, and have an opportunity to get more involved with extracurricular activities at the school. This proactive endeavor not only provided valuable insights into different student organizations but also sparked an increase in student involvement, catching the attention of several faculty members.

Among these vibrant groups, the Youth Advisory Council, also just called YAC club, stood out as an exemplar. Even during their off-season, this committee has worked throughout the summer to create a positive impact within the school community and beyond.

Betsy Vanegas, a member of the Iron Mountain High School YAC Club, shared, “A couple of us had the opportunity to go to this conference which was located at CMU. We got to learn about not only our YAC club but other YAC clubs that are downstate.”

With enthusiasm and inspiration kindled by the conference, the club members are determined to translate their newfound knowledge into meaningful actions that will resonate throughout the community. The YAC Club, led by advisor Kaye Miziniak, who now teaches upper elementary for the Iron Mountain School District, aims to leverage their experiences to create a lasting impact.

For Vanagas, who has been volunteering with YAC since she was in 8th grade, heading back to Iron Mountain High School this fall means excitement about engaging with her community.

“I’m really excited to get more involved this year, and I’m ready to share my ideas with all the volunteering that’s going to be going on.” Some of those ideas Vanegas is excited about sharing include possibly a car wash, and a movie night, or a father-daughter dance. The money from YAC club fundraisers goes toward grant funding that the club funnels into grants that go toward the local community.

The Iron Mountain students’ dedication to early engagement and proactive involvement will be highlighted in a feature airing tonight at eleven, ten central. As these young individuals continue to demonstrate their commitment to bettering their community, their efforts serve as a beacon of inspiration for their peers, and the wider society.
