NEGAUNEE, Mich. (WZMQ) – A Negaunee graduate is heading to Central Michigan University to play golf on partial scholarship.
Rachel Niskanen, a class of 2023 graduate will head to CMU in the fall to play for the Chippewas. Niskanen started playing her freshman year of highschool during a spring break trip. She was just trying to have some fun with her Dad when she found she was a natural talent and a love for the game.
Because of the Covid pandemic Niskanen has only played 3 years of competitive golf. Besides playing for Negaunee’s team she also competes in tournaments in downstate Michigan and Wisconsin.
Niskanen had originally planned on taking a gap year and heading down to South Carolina to work on her skills but was to her surprise offered a redshirt spot on Central’s team in June.
“I think in the U.P. golf is seen as a small little thing, and now it can be seen as a little bigger,” remarked Niskanen.
Niskanen will head downstate later this month and begin classes in the fall.
