15 year old driver hits the track at Sands Speedway

SANDS TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZMQ) – Hundreds of fans gather every weekend at Sands Speedway to watch drivers test their luck at the track, they get to see fast cars and a whole lot of action.

Every person at Sand Speedway shares a lot of things in common. For example they all love cars, and they all love racing. The drivers are no different; they all have the same competitive spirit. But one driver named Joshua Karnack, has one glaring difference from his competition,

Joshua doesn’t have a driver’s license.

When asked if he could legally drive a car on a road Joshua just laughed and said while he couldn’t yet he would be able to soon. But don’t get the wrong idea, the reason Joshua doesn’t have his license isn’t because he’s a bad driver or has done anything wrong, it’s because he’s only 15 years old.

“I’ve been driving since I was 13,” remarked Karnack.

Two years of experience has taught the young racer a lot but it’s what happens off the track that keeps drawing him back.

“Everybody hangs around and helps each other out when they’re in need,” said Karnack.

The speedway is a place for the drivers to gather together, have fun and build more than just cars. The drivers are building connections. One of the more experienced drivers, Tony Nayback, says the track is about camaraderie and having fun.

Even though these drivers all give each other a hand when needed, don’t let the sportsmanship fool you, when the green flag flies all bets are off.

“When you get out on the track all the friendship stops,” added Nayback.

But as soon as the racing is over the camaraderie resumes. races are held every Sunday through August 27th. Pit passes at the track are $25. General admission is $10, and kids 12 and under get in for free.
