MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – A rise in tuition is coming to Northern Michigan University.
At a special meeting on Tuesday the NMU Board of Trustees unanimously voted to adopt a proposal which will increase tuition rates for students by $338 per semester. The increase brings the undergraduate cost of attending northern for one semester $6,845 dollars.
The rise in tuition has brought concern to some incoming students.
“Not a lot of us did super well in school or were super effective on a sports field so it’s definitely a big concern to me,” Commented J.R. Nichols, an incoming freshman at Northern.
The reason behind the tuition raise is a number of initiatives the college is undertaking for the upcoming year. Northerns budget includes nearly $3,000,000 in campus upgrades and programs. over $1,000,000 of that will go towards student well being, experience, and safety.
A priority for the school is ensuring a secure campus for students.
“In public safety we’re ensuring that we have two officers at all times during the day and week,” said one member of the Board of Trustees during the special meeting.
$800,000 will go towards increasing enrollment at the university. The school has committed to increasing funding for the tuition advantage program, which provides scholarship money to students after they have received federal, state, and institutional funds.
The board says the number of students in the program has skyrocketed already from 68 to 157.
The new tuition rates will go into effect in the fall semester. the initiatives the school has committed to will also go into effect at that time.
Even with the tuition increase NMU remains as the second most affordable college in the state.
