MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – The YMCA will be hosting a brand-new water safety course, aiming to teach kids the dangers and skills to swim safely in lake superior. Starting on June 13th, the water safety program is built to give parents peace of mind during the upcoming summer months. The YMCA commented that teaching kids how to properly fit their life jackets and even swimming through riptide can help keep the day at the beach from becoming dangerous or life-threatening.
“Lake Superior and a lot of kids don’t know what to do in that situation and it’s important just to teach them so they don’t panic. The most important thing is just to feel comfortable in the water so that if that situation does arise you don’t panic and you swim parallel to the shore and you don’t fight it,” commented Sports and Aquatics Director Tyler Kellam.
The YMCA will have two full sessions of 5-week summer programs from the Basketball focused “HoopsFit” to “Dance and Creative Movement”.
