ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – On Sunday, May 21, a group of Escanaba motorcycle enthusiasts are participating in a global event for a good cause.
The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride gives motorcyclists a chance to ride together while dressed in their best “dapper” attire. The event started in Australia in 2012, then quickly spread to other parts of the world.
This is Escanaba’s second year joining the Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride. Participants will ride approximately 16 miles through the city, starting and ending at the Antique Village at the fairgrounds. The local ride is sponsored by Cycle City, the Magnuson Grand Pioneer Inn, and the Delta County Chamber of Commerce.
According to local event host and Cycle City manager Eric Malmsten, the purpose of the Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride is to raise funds–as well as awareness–for men’s mental health and prostate cancer research.
“If you look on the [Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride] website, it talks about how men on average die younger than women,” said Malmsten. “There’s a lot of these things that are preventable. It’s just raising awareness so that people can live longer and happier–and ride more motorcycles!”
Vintage and classic-style motorcycles are preferred. Helmets are required.
To sign up for the Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride or to donate to men’s health research, visit the local event’s Facebook page or the official ride website.
