ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – The first of 28 American Queen Voyages cruise ships arrived in Escanaba’s Little Bay de Noc on Sunday, May 14.
The Ocean Navigator docked before 7:30 a.m. Around 8:15 a.m., passengers departed the ship.
The City of Escanaba welcomed passengers and crew members with a performance by the City Band, gift bags from the Players de Noc, and pastries made by local shops. After a ribbon cutting, Mayor Mark Ammel presented the ship’s captain with a key to the city.
“We wanted it to be a memorable time not only for our guests but for the American Queen Voyages, so they understand what to expect and they will know what to expect with their next 27 visits to Delta County,” said Delta County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Vickie Micheau.
In addition to Delta County dignitaries, State Senator Ed McBroom and State Representative David Prestin spoke to cruise guests before they entered the city. Senator McBroom even had a short tour aboard the Ocean Navigator.
“It’s beautiful,” the senator said. “I can see why people enjoy taking these trips around and visiting all these various interesting ports. It looks like a good time for everyone on board, and it has very nice accommodations.”
After the welcoming ceremony, many passengers boarded the bus tour, which takes riders to a selection of businesses and attractions between the North Shore Logistics dock and the fairgrounds.
WZMQ 19 Escanaba bureau reporter Lily Simmons will have more details on the day’s events on our 6:00 p.m. newscast on Monday.
