Norway, Mich. (WZMQ) – Members of the Leo Club and Lions Club joined forces to clean up US-2, through Norway in Dickinson County. The annual event is eagerly anticipated by both groups, and this year was no exception, even in the 80-degree heat.
Sophomore Grace Schiltz and Senior Isaac Lorenzoni, both members of the Leo Club, shared their observations about the trash they found along the highway.
“A lot of take-out food. And if people didn’t eat in their cars, it wouldn’t be such a problem. A lot of just, a lot of car parts,” Schiltz said.
Lorenzoni added, “We went up and down the highway, and picked up all the trash that people have been throwing out of their cars pretty much, and a lot of car parts, too. It’s nice to volunteer and help the community, and help the school too.”
Treasurer of Vulcan-Norway Loretto Lions Club, Terri Backlund, said the event is an excellent opportunity for the youth to give back to the community.
“We have a lot of older members in our club, so to get the youth out here and stuff like that, is really, really good,” Backlund said.
Before hitting US-2, members of the Leo Club get a safety brief with a training video to ensure that everything is done safely.
After the highway cleanup work was done, the Leos were rewarded with a well-deserved treat, pizza provided by the Lion’s Club. The Lions and Leos cleaned up the highway from Red Line in Norway up to the old meat-packing facility west of Norway.
“We go up, clean along both sides of the highway, and the kids do a great job,” a member of the Lions Club said.
The annual event not only helps to keep the highway and our beautiful Upper Peninsula sparkling clean, but also brings together members of the community to work towards a common goal. Coming up next for the Lions and Leos big events, the Lions and Leos will be having a chicken-fry at Marion Park on July 9th, which will be a fundraiser for the club with raffles and prizes.
