MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – Presque Isle Park’s Blue Spotted Salamanders are making their way through the park to the wetlands. The warmer spring nights and melting snow let The Salamanders know it’s time to move.
The city started closing the road in Presque Isle park back in 2020 after Northern Michigan University students performed a study that showed hundreds of salamanders were killed by cars that year…
This year, more salamanders spotters are out than ever, hundreds of people have already been out to see them make their trip. Marquette High School Senior, Kaia Miller says its her third year out to see The Salamanders.
“They’re so beautiful and this is their habitat,” Miller says, “We’re kind of here, so it’s good so we can block it off so they can survive. We don’t wanna run them over.”
The salamanders will be making their trip to lay their eggs over the next few weeks. If you go salamander spotting make sure you stay on the road and watch your step to keep the salamanders safe.
