MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – We have wrapped up an excellent and exciting girls basketball season, and on Friday, All-UP honors for the best of the best were announced.
In Divisions 1-3, Isabella Hebert of Hancock took home player of the year honors averaging 18 and a half points and grabbing 9 rebounds per game, while leading the Bulldogs to a 20-2 record and a district final appearance. Hebert was also named Miss U.P. Basketball for the 2022-2023 season.
In Division 4, it was Leah French of Engadine being named Player of the Year, putting up a 26.6 points and 7 rebounds per game, including 54 in a win over St Ignace.
Mike O’Donnell of Negaunee was named coach of the year in Divisions 1-3. After losing a large portion of production from last year’s team, O’Donnell led the Miners to a 22-5 overall record, a district championship, a place in the Regional final, and a win streak that lasted 19 games.
For the second year in a row in Division 4, Tyler Larson of Baraga was named coach of the year after leading the Vikings to a 23-6 record and a spot in the State Championship Game.
Sault Ste Marie was named Team of the Year in Divisions 1-2 after a 21-3 record. The Blue Devils lost just once to a U.P. opponent and earned a way into the Division 1 regional final.
In Division 3, Hancock was named Team of the Year despite losing in their district championship to Negaunee. The Bulldogs finished with just one regular season loss and were a unanimous #1 in the final UPSSA Division 1-3 poll.
And, of course Baraga, who finished as the Division 4 state runner-up was named Team of the Year in Division 4.
Joining our Players of the Year on the Dream Team were Kiera Maki of Escanaba, Ella Mason of Negaunee, and Kate Borseth of Ewen – Trout Creek.
The boys All-UP teams come out Friday, April 7.
