WASHINGTON, D.C. – Recent polling shows most Americans support the indictment against former president Donald Trump. In that same poll, most people believe politics played a major role in that decision to indict.
In a recent poll conducted by SSRS, 60 percent of Americans approve of the indictment of former president Donald Trump.
“A majority support it but also a majority say it’s politically motivated,” said Todd Belt, George Washington University Director of Political Management.
According to the poll, approval of the indictment was mostly along party lines. 94 percent of democrats approve it. 79 percent of republicans disapprove the decision to indict. For independents, 62 percent approve of the decision to indict. Overall, 52 percent of the people polled believe politics played a major role in the decision to indict.
In a New York courtroom, Trump pleaded not guilty to 34 counts of falsifying business records. He is accused of making hush money payments to women who claim they had affairs with him. He is also accused of trying to suppress negative information about him that would’ve hurt his campaign. Prosecutors also allege he was part of an illegal conspiracy to undermine the integrity of the 2016 presidential election.
“Why did Donald Trump repeatedly make these false statements,” said Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg. “The evidence will show that he did so to cover up crimes relating to the 2016 election.”
The former president has slammed the case against him, calling it a political witch hunt.
“Even people that aren’t big fans have said it; They said this is not the right thing to do,” said Trump. “It’s an insult to our country as the world is already laughing at us for so many other reasons.”
Political scientists said regardless of what happens to Trump, supporters of the former president will most likely stay loyal to him.
