MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – April marks Sexual Assault Awareness month, advocating for survivors and those affected by sexual assault. The Women’s Center in Marquette is hosting a number of events this April, helping to fundraise for the organization.
All month long, the Women’s Center staff and Michigan State Police will be collecting purses, toiletries, bus tickets, and sunglasses for survivors for the “Purses with a purpose event”, growing more opportunities for those victims’ voices to be heard. “That person sitting there is someone sitting outside of their survivorship you know they’re just regular community members like anyone else. To have someone sitting there supporting you and walking you through the process I think is incredibly important,” said S.A.R.T. Coordinator Madison Meehling.
The Women’s Center is also looking for sexual assault response volunteers to help. Volunteers are dispatched to the hospitals to aid those victims after an incident.
“It’s not as hard or scary as it seems. We are in desperate need of people that just have kind souls and I know there are kind souls out there that want to just meet with someone and support them and help them,” continued Meehling.
