ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – Delta County is coming together this weekend to help union members at the Billerud Paper Mill affected by fungal infections.
The Women of Steel are hosting a benefit breakfast at the United Steelworkers Local 21 Hall on Sunday, April 2. The event will begin at 7:00 a.m. and end at 2:00 p.m.
A breakfast of pancakes, bacon, sausage, donuts, coffee, and other menu items will be served. Baked goods will also be available to purchase. There will also be a silent auction, raffles, and activities and prizes for children.
Donations will be accepted. Proceeds will support the union workers who are suffering from blastomycosis.
“I have always said I am simply amazed at how generous our community is–and our neighboring communities,” said Donna Dams, Woman of Steel Local 21 coordinator. “We have been hit so hard lately with tragedies in this community, and everybody just seems to come together. It’s overwhelming, to be honest with you.”
According to Public Health Delta & Menominee Counties, there are now 19 confirmed blastomycosis cases. There are also 62 probable cases.
If you would like to donate to the affected workers but cannot attend Sunday’s breakfast, checks can be sent to the union hall at 1201 Sheridan Road in Escanaba. Click here for more information.
