ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – Nominations are now open for an important election in Escanaba.
The City of Escanaba will elect two new council members in November, as current council members Tyler DuBord and Karen Moore reach the end of their terms. Council members serve a four-year term, during which they work together to make decisions for the community.
“Council members are more or less the legislative and governing body of the city,” said City Clerk Phil DeMay. “They have the authority to pass ordinances, adopt resolutions as they see fit, and other duties that come along with being on council like approvals and budget hearings.”
Any U.S. citizen who has been an Escanaba resident for two years is eligible to apply. To qualify, candidates must collect at least 50 signatures from registered Escanaba voters.
“They’re the ones that represent their constituents,” DeMay said. “They are elected for that position to make choices on their behalf. Ultimately, that’s going to be up to the voters to nominate who they believe the right people for that position would be.”
Application packets are available at the Escanaba City Clerk’s Office at 410 Ludington Street. Nominations will close at 4:00 p.m. on July 25. The election is scheduled for November 7.
