MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – County Commission plans to rename Sawyer International Airport.
The Marquette County Board of Commissioners held a public hearing this afternoon about renaming the county owned airport. This past November, the commission announced a rebranding initiative for the aging facility. The renaming of the airport is part of this. So far, one name option is standing out more than the others.
Joseph Derocha, Marquette County Vice Chair said, “Certainly overwhelming group of individuals today, like to see the name Kelly Johnson, added in there. And, certainly, Marquette, where we live.”
Kelly Johnson was born in Ishpeming and had a long career working in the aerospace industry at places like Lockheed Martin. No decisions were made today. A commission vote on the name change will take place at a later date.
