GLADSTONE, Mich. (WZMQ) — A multiple vehicle crash in Delta County claimed the lives of two people Friday afternoon, according to Michigan State Police.
It was reported on US 2 near the Fishdam River in Garden Township around 3:55 p.m.
A white Toyota SUV and a black Chevrolet SUV were heading eastbound on US 2 when they approached a westbound semi-truck and trailer, according to troopers. The semi-truck lost control and drifted towards the north side of the highway when the driver attempted to correct this, but the semi-truck crossed the centerline into the eastbound lane.
The semi-truck struck the white Toyota SUV head-on, state police said. The two people inside the SUV – Gerald Weaver, 47, and Tara Weaver, 46, both of Escanaba – were pronounced dead at the scene.
Afterwards, the black Chevrolet SUV hit the rear-end of the trailer on the semi. Troopers said the driver of the Chevrolet SUV – a 38-year-old man from Oshkosh Wisconsin – was pinned inside the vehicle and had to be removed from the vehicle. He reportedly suffered multiple broken bones.
The driver of the semi-truck, who is from Canada, was not injured, according to state police.
A semi-truck and trailer and a passenger vehicle also collided as they attempted to stop, but troopers said there were no injuries in this crash.
US 2 was closed while troopers investigated.
The crash remains under investigation, but state police said speed and driving too fast for conditions appear to be factors in this crash.
