Governor Gretchen Whitmer delivers her 5th State of The State Address

by Sophia Murphy
January 25, 2023 - Updated on January 17, 2024
A A

Governor Gretchen Whitmer delivered her state of the state address tonight. For the first time in 3 years, the address was held in person, it’s also Whitmer’s first time delivering this address to a democratic majority in Michigan’s legislature…

Governor Whitmer laid out a pretty hefty to do list for this year, education, infrastructure, public safety,  and climate policy…

Tonight, Governor Whitmer covered some of her priorities for 2023. To start off her address, Governor Whitmer discussed a few new bill plans, the first of which is called Lowering My Costs. It’s a plan that would lower retirement taxes, expand the working families tax credit, and introduce a Pre K for all program to families all over Michigan.

Make It In Michigan was the second proposed plan, its main goal is to empower economic development by funding manufacturing, sustainable energy, and natural resources here in Michigan. Governor Whitmer said she plans to continue to fund policies surrounding education, infrastructure, and climate change. She discussed the expansion of operation: safe neighborhoods. an expansion that would introduce background checks to the firearm purchasing process and safe storage laws as well as extreme risk protection orders. Lastly, Governor Whitmer doubled down on her intentions to repeal Michigan’s 1931 abortion ban, as well as expand The Elliott-Larsen civil rights act.

Michigan’s GOP has responded to Governor Whitmer’s address, they said “republicans want to take the claim that The Governor want to lower your taxes but actions speak louder than words… house and sente republicans will continue to try to work with the Governor where we can because that what you need us to do, but to do so Michiganders desperately need their governor’s actions to finally match her words.”

WZMQ will be checking in with UP legislators, to hear their reactions, tune to 19 News, Thursday, January 26th,at 6 PM EST.
