Ahead of tomorrow’s State of the State address from Governor Gretchen Whitmer, we’re checking in with our UP legislators on their goals for this year.
Senator Ed McBroom is now in his second term representing the 38th district in Michigan’s Senate. With our state legislature back in session, McBroom said he’s excited to continue his work from his previous term, McBroom says “There’s really two aspects to the job, there’s the constituent relations part, there’s doing the work to help the people who are having trouble with the government and I enjoy doing that and I enjoy working on the policy aspects”
During his previous term, McBroom has had a focus on improving government ethics as well as creating a permanent space for a UP educator on Michigan’s board of education, “Guiding curriculum in a way that’s great for their own aptitudes, and hopefully promotes all things: arts, traditional academics, vocational and careers instead of just keeping our students boxed in.”
McBroom said The UP team is settling into their new dynamics, and that he hopes despite their differences, they’ll find common ground like they have in the past.
“it was about family, it was about good paying jobs, it was about utilizing our natural resources in a safe and responsible way, keeping our culture and our heritage, and I hope that all of us still come with those exact same values because then even if we do disagree on how it’s implemented we know that we all agree on what we’re trying to get to.”
