Hancock, Mich. (WZMQ) – The ladder truck at the Hancock Fire Department will soon be receiving a nearly 400 hundred thousand dollar refurbishment.
The truck is one of the only aerial ladder trucks in copper country. Which makes it vital to rescue operations for not only the city of Hancock but for many departments on the Keweenaw Peninsula.
The city decided to refurbish the truck after it was determined the body and engine of the truck were in near mint condition.
The cost of a new truck would be $1.7 million dollars; the total cost of refurbishment is going to be $395 thousand.
Hancock Fire Chief Bill Lepisto says the truck is a lifesaver. The city has an agreement with other departments in Copper Country to use the truck to assist in emergency situations.
Lepisto says the truck was used just last year to save an elderly woman from a structure fire in Houghton.
The refurbishment will take somewhere from 90-120 days to complete once started and is set to begin this summer.
