WASHINGTON, D.C. – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is in our nation’s capital. He met with President Biden and he delivered an address to congress.
You can just feel the energy from President Zelensky’s visit at the Capitol. Many members strongly support Ukraine’s fight against Russia’s invasion. In his address to Congress, Zelensky also spoke to the American people.
Just before Zelensky entered into the House chambers, we captured him with Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D- CA) and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D- NY) in the halls of the Capitol. Other members like Michigan’s Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) also met with him. Once he made his way to the podium, the applause didn’t die down for a while.
“Dear Americans in all states, cities and communities, all those who value freedom and justice, who cherish it strongly as we Ukrainians do in all cities in each and every family, I owe my words of respect and gratitude in each American heart,” said Zelensky.
Zelensky’s brief 25 minute speech, which was often interrupted by cheers of support, applause and standing ovations, he said the battle for Ukraine continues but it’s more than just a battle of territory.
“The struggle will define in what world our children and grandchildren will live, it will define whether it will be a democracy of Ukrainians and for Americans, for all this battle cannot be frozen or postponed, it cannot be ignored,” said Zelensky.
He also took the time to thank congress for their continued financial support for Ukraine and said their success depends on it.
“Your money is not charity, it’s an investment in the global security and democracy that we handle in the most responsible way,” said Zelensky,
Before Zelensky gave a flag from those who defend Ukraine, he thanked the American people for their support. Some Republican members have said before that they’re concerned about the costliness to financially support Ukraine’s efforts but Zelensky’s presence at the Capitol is significant because he’s asking all members and the American people to not give up on them.
