What to Expect in the Last January 6 Committee Hearing

by Rachel Knapp

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The House Select Committee investigating the January 6, 2021 U.S Capitol attack will have their last hearing for a while. Over the past couple of weeks, the committee has conducted live witness testimony, documenting about the chaos of that day, as well as unfolding the events and discussions leading up to that dark day.

Committee members said we could expect to hear in more detail about what went on in the west wing during the nearly four hours of the Capitol attack. Republican Representative Adam Kinzinger (R- IL) who is on the committee, tweeted out video from witness testimony about what the former president was doing during the attack:

“Do you know whether he was watching TV in the dining room on January 6,” asked one committee investigators. “It’s my understanding he was watching television,” responded former executive assistant to the President, Molly Michael. “When you were in the dining room in these discussions, was the violence at the Capitol visible on the screen? On the television,” asked one committee investigator. “Yes,” responded former White House counsel Pat Cipollone.

The committee is trying to show viewers that the president saw and heard what was happening at the Capitol on January sixth and we expect them to demonstrate that trump could’ve called off the mob, but didn’t until hours later. While this is the expected to be the last hearing for awhile, Representative Jamie Raskin (D-MD) who also sits on the committee, said they’re still conducting their investigation as new evidence continues to be shared with the committee and could have more hearings later down the road.

“Certainly, we need to do a hearing to discuss our conclusions and the recommendations that we’re making for fortification of American democracy against coups, political violence, attempts to steal away the will of the American people and take over elections which is what we saw January 6th and which, alas, continues to go on with the same forces that were already against us that day,” said Raskin.

We expect the committee to lay out their final case against former president Donald Trump that he tried to overturn the 2020 election, which led to the U.S. Capitol attack. In previous hearings, we’ve heard witness testimony from Capitol Police officers who were injured during the attack, members of the Proud Boys, elected state officials and former trump White House staffers.

We can expect the committee to call on two former white house staffers tonight: a former deputy press secretary and a former national security advisor who resigned after the January 6th attack.
