El-Sayed, Rogers Launched Personal Attacks during their TV Debate for Michigan’s Senate Seat

WASHINGTON, D.C. – In one of the most closely watched Senate races, Dr. Abdul El-Sayed, the Democratic candidate, and Mike Rogers, the Republican candidate, debated each other in an attempt to win over voters for the competitive Michigan race. Some of the most prominent moments of the debate were the personal attacks against each other. The finger pointing even took place during the commercial breaks and it became so intense, the moderator repeatedly asked the candidates to rein in their attacks.

During the debate, candidates were asked about issues that are important to voters, from the economy, to healthcare, data centers and the Iran war. However, the personal attacks stole the spotlight in the debate.

“And that’s kind of what you’d expect,” said Dr. Todd Belt, a professor and director of the graduate political management program at George Washington University. “A lot of people these days have already made up their mind and what we know about late voters, the ones who make up their minds close to the election is the personal characteristics of the candidates that actually mean the most to them in terms of their vote choice.”

Tensions soared during an exchange over flock safety cameras, which El-Sayed shared his concerns on surveillance. Rogers countered the cameras were important for catching people suspected of terrorism.

“Why would that bother you,” asked Rogers in the debate. “If you have someone in your family who was on the watch?”

“Are you going to say, go ahead and say it,” responded El-Sayed. “You’ve been tiptoeing around it this whole time just say it.”

The pair are planning to debate a second time before the election. They’re in a fiercely tight race in a state President Donald Trump won by just over one point in 2024. We’re told to win over undecided voters, they’ll need to focus on policy, rather than personal jabs.

“Telling those voters what they’ll do,” said Dr. Belt. “Specific policies that will make their lives better for people who are dealing with the real problems of inflation right now.”
