Gwinn Modeltowners return to classes Monday

GWINN, Mich. (WZMQ) – On Monday, the Gwinn Modeltowners will return to the classrooms. They’ll start with a quick refresher half-day to give students everything they need for a successful school year ahead.

“That first half day is a lot, but getting them back in the swing of things is critical,” said Superintendent Dr. Sara Croney.

A clear and major change to cell phones in schools in Michigan this fall has already been implemented in Gwinn. Croney says these were in place as soon as discussions of these laws began circulating, and that they’re already on track to continue utilizing the regulations as usual.

“The rules are out there, the parents have known that,” she said. “We’ve communicated well since two years ago, and certainly now… it’s all in our handbook.”

While Artificial Intelligence also bleeds its way into everyday tasks and education, Croney says it must be welcomed as much as ethically possible, as its students may have to be fluent in the technology in the furture.

“How do we use it without plagiarism, and in an ethical and responsible way? That’s something we have to face,” she said.

Looking towards election season after multiple failed proposals, the school is in a new phase with a new bond resoltion. This has been set at a 1.89 millage rate ($24.95 million over 30 years) for a new roof and HVAC system, as well as other classroom renovations. The school says although a large amount of improvements will be left out, these changes will fit within a slimmer budget. You can find those full details here.

Multiple informational meetings will take place through November. Those are listed as follows:

  • 9/22 – 6:00PM KI Sawyer Elementary School, 411 Scorpion, Gwinn
  • 9/23 – 11:30AM Forsyth Township Senior Center, 165 N. Maple, Gwinn (Lunch to follow)
  • 9/23 – 6:00PM West Branch Township Hall, 1016 County Rd 545, Skandia
  • 9/24 – 1:30PM Ledford Tax & Financial Services, 302 N State Hwy M553, Marquette
  • 9/24 – 6:00PM Little Lake Chapel, 1671 M-35, East, Little Lake
  • 9/29 – 6:00PM Forsyth Township Clubhouse, 165 N Maple, Gwinn
