Younger, Anti-Establishment Democrats Looking to Reshape the Party in Congress

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Political scientists are seeing a trend of anti-establishment Democratic candidates oust their opponents in the primaries. If these new candidates are to win their seat in the November election, it could change the makeup of the Democratic caucus in Congress.

“There is a younger generational trend there are a lot of younger people in their generation who believe it’s their time,” said Dr. Todd Belt, professor and director of the political management graduate program at George Washington University.

In a handful of Democratic primaries across states like New York, Connecticut and Colorado, just to name a few, some incumbent Democratic Representatives have lost to younger challengers.

“They’ve been inspired by Zohran Mamdani, and we’re sort of calling this the ‘Mamdani effect’ that they want to get out there and they think it’s time for these other politicians to get out of the way,” said Dr. Belt. “And you can think of some of the problems Democrats have had with Joe Biden to be honest in some of his incapacity towards the end of his term and the fact that a lot of young people don’t see the Democratic insiders, the older establishment, as really stepping up to Donald Trump.”

According to recent polls, some Democrats are frustrated and have been with their party and are hungry for change. Age has played a part in that.

If Democrats regain control of the House, this new wave of Democrats could alter the party’s caucus and possibly Congress, too.

“If we have a Speaker [Hakeem] Jeffries on the Democratic side he may have to deal with a number of young Democrats who might be a bit more progressive and might not be in line with some of the things he wants to do,” said Dr. Belt. “There was a handful of them, notably ‘the squad’ when Nancy Pelosi was Speaker and she was able to reign them in and keep them in line with the larger Democratic caucus. So, we’ll have to see if Jeffries is able to do this because as the Republicans have shown, a small, intense group within your party can even dethrone a Speaker.”
