LANSING, Mich. (WZMQ) – Michigan State Police are encouraging residents to safely dispose of unused or expired medications during National Prescription Drug Take Back Day this weekend.
All 31 MSP posts across the state will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 25, accepting prescription pills anonymously and with no questions asked.
Officials say unused medications in the home can create serious risks, particularly when they fall into the wrong hands.
“Some prescribed medication with fentanyl, with opioids in it, or any other type of narcotic can cause problems, especially if a child or a teenager, someone that shouldn’t be taking a drug, gets a hold of it,” said Col. James F. Grady II, director of the Michigan State Police.
Grady said even very small amounts of certain drugs, especially fentanyl, can be deadly.
In addition to the take-back event, MSP is focusing on long-term solutions through its Angel Program, which helps people struggling with substance use disorder find treatment.
“If you walk into any state police posts, we are working hand in hand with other organizations, subject matter experts that can come in, conduct an assessment, and try to make sure that they get you to a treatment facility,” Grady said.
The program allows individuals to seek help directly at MSP posts, where they are connected with professionals and support services.
Grady said enforcement alone is not enough to address substance abuse.
“You cannot arrest your way out of a situation. But providing the wraparound services, making sure that people have resources and tools to help them work through, you know, that sickness, that’s something that we want to be involved in,” he said.
Michigan State Police collected nearly 650 pounds of prescription drugs during the last take-back event in October 2025.
Officials say both removing unused medications and connecting people to treatment are key steps in reducing substance abuse and protecting communities.
Residents who miss Saturday’s event can still drop off medications at MSP posts during regular weekday hours.
