MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Upper Peninsula Environmental Coalition is celebrating its 50th anniversary with events throughout the weekend.
Beginning tonight with a fundraising concert at køgnisjon bryggeri.
The fundraiser is in support of UPEC, which is continuing its work to protect natural resources across Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
The group focuses on issues like clean water, wildlife preservation, and responsible mining, while also advocating for policies that support long-term environmental sustainability.
“Every year, we’re able to support tons of different community conservation and environmental organization programs, so all sorts of schools around the U.P. Organizations that are setting aside land for things like community forests, helping to make it easier for people to hike, fish, and hunt, and really just enjoy what the U.P. is,” said UPEC President Evan Zimmermann. Through community education, public outreach, and grassroots activism, the coalition encourages residents to get involved in protecting the region’s forests, lakes, and shorelines.
Leaders say that with growing environmental challenges, local engagement is more important than ever.
