Walsh wins in straight sets

HAMMOND, Ind. – The Michigan Tech volleyball team wrapped up play at the 17th annual Midwest Region Crossover with a 3-0 loss to Walsh on Saturday afternoon. The Cavaliers won 25-22, 25-18, and 27-25.

“We battled another talented team today and were unable to gain an advantage in the match,” Tech coach Cindy Pindral said. “We have a lot of work to do before we face very tough conference opponents next weekend.”

Four different Huskies had at least two kills in the opening set, but the Cavaliers held a slight lead throughout. Tech survived three setpoints before Walsh got a kill from Sammie DiBease.

Walsh (14-5) never trailed in the middle frame and used an 8-2 to gain control, leading by as many as eight. Jacqueline Yancy had five kills in the second for the Huskies.

Tech led for most of the third and were leading 20-15 before the Cavaliers mounted a comeback to tie it at 22. The Huskies battled through three match points, before Walsh closed the match with a kill by Izzy Shank and an ace by Brynn Egbert.

Jacqueline Yancy led Tech with 13 kills, while Paige Wagner hit .556, tallying 11 kills and five blocks. Avery Brown set the offense with 27 assists and added 12 digs. Julia Fledderjohn led the defense with 14 digs.

Kamoron Stover tallied a match-high 15 kills for the Cavaliers, while Aj Burick had 31 assists, and Locie Levengood registered 19 digs.

Tech is 7-11 overall and wrapped up non-conference play Saturday. The Huskies now get back to GLIAC action next weekend against Wayne State on Friday and Grand Valley State on Saturday at the SDC Gym.
