MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – Registration for U.P. Michigan Works! new “Hammer Time” boot camp opens today and will be open through April. The boot camp on June 16-20 will be an opportunity for people without any carpentry experience to learn and try out the carpentry and millwright trades before entering a career. Kara Borghi the Marquette and Alger talent services manager for U.P. Michigan Works! said they are having the boot camp to address the growing needs for trades workers in Michigan.
“Across the UP we’re anticipating a growth of 14.3% minimum in carpenter and millwright positions through the year 2030 and that number is even bigger across the state as a whole,” said Kara. “So we’re really hoping to get more people interested in the trades and in carpentry and millwright specifically.”
Beyond basic skills, the boot camp will also give applicants an opportunity for a paid apprenticeship and union membership.
“And at the final day of the bootcamp there’s going to be a combine so their going to showcase their skills for local contractors to earn a position with an employer sponsored apprenticeship,” said Borghi. “So it’s kind of a fast track for getting into the union.”
Applicants should expect an interview in May before attending the boot camp. If you’re interested in applying, applications can be found here.
