MENOMINEE, Mich. (WZMQ) – Menominee police are warning the public about an aggressive dog seen near an elementary school after an incident Thursday that led to another aggressive dog being killed by police.
Feb. 6, Menominee Police Department officers responded to a report of two aggressive pit bulls near Menominee Elementary School after the school resource officer alerted dispatch that the dogs were at the playground barking at children aggressively.
Officers located the dogs on the 1200 block of 10th St. where it was initially reported that a person had been attacked. It was later determined that while the dogs aggressively charged the person, no actual bite occurred. Shortly after, another person was chased by the dogs and had to seek safety in the bed of a pickup truck.
Police attempted to capture the dogs using a dog pole and tasers but were unsuccessful. Police say as the situation escalated, officers observed the dogs running back toward the school playground. To prevent an immediate threat to the children, officers struck the dogs with a patrol vehicle and fatally shot one of them.
The second dog, a brown and white female pit bull, remains at large and may be injured. Residents are urged to use caution and report any sightings to the Menominee Police Department at 906-863-5568.
Police say the safety of the community, especially children, remains their top priority.
