Falcons earn sweep over Wildcats

NMU can’t recover from BG’s 2-0 lead

MARQUETTE, Mich. – The NMU hockey team dropped the second game of its weekend series with Bowling Green 5-2.

The hot hands of Tanner Latsch (5-1–6) and Rasmus Larsson (2-0–2) continued, as both of them scored their second goal of the weekend. Grayden Slipec (6-7–13), Medrick Bolduc (2-2–4), and Anthony Cliche (3-2–5) all recorded assists.

Starter Ryan Ouellette was relieved after 24 minutes of playing time, making 12 saves. Julian Molinaro entered in relief, making 22 saves in 33 minutes for a .957 SV%.

Colby Browne had a penalty shot attempt in the second period, hitting the post. The last Wildcat to make a penalty shot was Vincent De Mey on December 18, 2020, against Michigan Tech.

The ‘Cats are next on the road Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, to take on the Lake Superior State Lakers. Puck drop from Taffey Abel is 7:07 PM Friday, February 7, and 6:07 PM Saturday, February 8.

How It Happened
The Falcons were awarded the first power play of the game and were able to convert. After a goal was overturned by a high stick, the Falcons would score legitimately off the ensuing faceoff, giving the Falcons a 1-0 lead.

The Falcons made it 2-0 before the period ended from a broken play. A Wildcat player was interfered with in the Falcon end and went uncalled by the officials. The Falcons broke out of the zone, Kabanov snuck into a soft area in the slot, and elevated the puck from in close to beat Ouellette.

A seeing-eye pass from the left corner found the stick of O’Hara left alone in the slot, and the captain fired home a shot that beat the sliding Ouellette to give the Falcons a 3-0 lead and end Ouellette’s night.

The ‘Cats got on the board after a hard-working forecheck from Slipec was finished off by Larsson, a perfectly placed shot over the glove of Stoever on the far side.

The Falcons got a goal back five minutes before the second intermission from a seeing-eye shot that found its way through heavy traffic.

It was Latsch once again who gave the Wildcats hope, this time cutting the Falcon lead to just two with plenty of time left on the clock. Bolduc made a nice move around his defender and found Latsch on the doorstep, who beat the netminder Moore from in tight.

A full length of the ice empty net goal from Scardina in the dying seconds sealed the deal at 5-2 final.
