ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – On Saturday a local favorite restaurant, the Stonehouse, burned down and the community is feeling the loss, “I went and bought a bunch of cards for my family members to go there, we were going to go there and no we’re like where do we go,” said Kalisa Ray a community member. “Stonehouse was the best place to go to eat.”
Now, community members and local businesses are banding together to help support the owners and employees. “They’re donating, the businesses around for the Stonehouse and the employees so that’s a good thing,” said Community Member Larry Couillard. “Yeah I think that’s a wonderful thing it says a lot about our community and hopefully that’s goin to help out the employees, especially this time of year. Any time of year is terrible but being around the holidays makes it a little harder,” said anther community member Cindy Couillard.
The Escanaba Eagles Club is holding a fundraiser breakfast on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 608 Ludington St. to help support the employees, entry will be $10.
With the local support some residents are wondering if the restaurant will try to reopen, but either way they’re happy to help and hopeful for the future. “We hope so. I think the whole town hopes so,” said Ray. “Not sure if it’s true or not but we did hear that they’re going to rent out the log cabin. I hope they do and I hope they open soon because it’s not Christmas without going to the Stonehouse.”
