ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – On Veterans Day, the Bay College Civics Corps hosted a virtual event where veterans shared their stories with the public.
The third annual Veterans Speak event featured a panel of servicemembers from various branches and wars. They answered questions about why they joined the military, their experiences, and the lessons they have learned.
Bill Balabanow, a World War II veteran, discussed the lesser-known Merchant Marine branch and told stories about the 250,000 members who transported equipment and troops around the world.
“Every man, bar none, volunteered to do his duty,” said Balabanow. “Not one of them was drafted. Some of these guys were in their mid-70s, many even 80s, some were missing limbs, some eyesight, but they all were unfit for duty. We each, however, found our way to the Merchant Marine recruiting station, where we were permitted to fight for our country.”
Veterans also offered guidance to young servicemembers and those considering entering the military.
