DNR hears comment on horse trails

Sands Twp., Mich. (WZMQ) – The Michigan DNR held a public comment session today in Sands township to help determine how a recently upgraded trail system will be used in the future. The Thunder Valley Equestrian Trail was built for the horse community after the Blueberry Ridge trails were deemed off limits to horses. The Thunder Valley Trail, which has recently been enlarged to include 13.5 miles of horse friendly Trails is getting pushback from mountain bikers who feel they have a right to use the trails as well. tonight’s meeting was held to gather public opinion on whether or not bikes should be allowed. The DNR’s Ron Yesney explains the problems when bikes and horses meet.

“Horses will interpret bicycles to be predators because they’re fast, they’re large, and they’re quiet. So that’s the problem so they just don’t interface well.” Said Yesney.

With 1000s of miles of bike trails throughout the state, the equestrian community feels that the 13.5 miles of The Thunder Valley trails isn’t too much to ask. in speaking with people who enjoy being in the saddle, it’s a question of safety. Lifetime horse rider Wendy moss says it’s time for the equestrian community to get their own trails.

“We need a few private trails just for horses, a lot of bike trails, there’s a lot of ATV trails, snowmobiles. ski trails. We have so few.” Said Maas.

The process for making Thunder Valley for horses only has a few more hurdles to overcome, including trying to appease others who wish to use the trails. Yesney believes they will find a solution.

“There are other places to bike but maybe we can find some balance and do something that works well for everyone on state land.” Said Yesney.
