MARQUETTE, Mich (WZMQ) – At 7:30 this morning the first chicken for the annual Kiwanis Chicken BBQ was laid. This is the 67th year this fundraiser has been happening and overall the organization has raised 1.3 million to give back to the community.
This fundraiser was started to give back to the community and money to multiple organizations that could use it. Some organizations the Kiwanis Club has supported are Harbor House, The Women’s Center, youth baseball, youth volleyball, and many more.
The Marquette senior Volleyball team even helps with the drive-through. As the club members make the chicken, the volleyball players take how many meals each car bought and bring them out to them. Kiwanis club member said his favorite part is preparing and cooking the chicken.
“We’re a little bit behind, we apologize for that but we won’t send in uncooked chicken, but it’s cooked over charcoal we butter it and then we sauce it, sauce, it sauce it, then treat it with a little salt at the end then send it in for dinners”, Michael Morgan, Kiwanis Club Member.
The dinner box has chicken, a baked potato, a dinner roll, a cup of ice cream, and milk. This fundraiser is a chance to give back to the community as well as be able to enjoy a warm cooked meal.
Organizers recommend everyone join a service club and help support their community. For more information on the Marquette Kiwanis Club go to their Facebook page.
