MUNISING, Mich (WZMQ) – The Munising community and surrounding members gathered to learn emergency rescue tools for horses and other large animals. This was the course’s first year, 50 people showed up, and of those 50, 20 first responders and 2 veterinarians.
The point of this course is to provide helpful training on making and using emergency rescue tools and tricks. The participants learned how to make an emergency halter to catch a horse. The course also taught how to make a rescue noodle and how you can use it. For a horse or other large animals, while swimming you can help keep their head up, or if they are lying on a tough surface a pillow for their head.
The course instructor started these to ensure horses and their owners were safe if there is a way to help or save a horse or person why not?
“To just bring the knowledge, I always want to know or hope that some horse and horse owner just don’t suffer more, that you can have a good save, the firefighter can say we got on the scene we knew exactly what to do”, Vicki Schmitt, Large Animal Emergency Course Instructor.
Another Large Animal Emergency Course is being held next week in Lansing, for more information check out their Facebook page.
