RAPID RIVER, Mich. (WZMQ) – Rapid River is gearing up for its 51st Memorial Day celebration on May 27.
This year’s theme is “Home of the Free Because of the Brave.” As part of the theme, the annual barbecue competition will also be a fundraiser, benefitting the Upper Peninsula Honor Flight and local veterans. Prizes for the competition will be donated by Rapid River Knifeworks.
The festivities will also include a parade along Main Street, music in Masonville Township Park, food trucks, activities for kids, the annual kickball tournament, and other community-favorite traditions.
“I’ve only been up here in the U.P. like 14 years now, but I own Jack’s [Restaurant], and every day we hear the stories,” said Bobbi Ryan, who also owns the Brisket Barn. “Rapid River is very good about history, so we want to do the things that we do—nominate the queen and the whole nine yards. It’s awesome to be able to hang onto the history but also move forward.”
Organizers are looking for more grillers for the barbecue competition. Those interested in signing up can find Bobbi at Jack’s Restaurant, call Jack’s at (906) 474-9927, or call the Brisket Barn at (906) 399-1748.
