ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – On Tuesday, local organizations and businesses teamed up to feed veterans and their loved ones this Easter.
The Community Foundation for Delta County hosted a drive-through food basket distribution for 150 veterans at the U.P. State Fairgrounds.
“We coordinate with the Escanaba Vet Center,” said Community Foundation Executive Director Cheryl Andzejewski. “They handle getting the list together, they call the veterans, then our work begins.”
The Community Foundation worked with Feeding America to order much of the food, with the rest coming from Aldi. Sayklly’s Confectionary & Gifts provided chocolate fudge eggs for each veteran.
With smoked ham, turkey, pork loins, fruits, vegetables, bread, and other foods, veterans received enough food to make several meals around the Easter holiday.
“People forget about Easter, and Easter’s a big holiday,” Andzejewski said. “We wanted to make sure that we were able to give an extra time in the year, besides our Thanksgiving basket distribution. We really appreciate their service, so it’s our small way of saying ‘thank you’ to 150 families.”
According to Andzejewski, this was the largest amount of food The Community Foundation for Delta County and volunteers have distributed so far. Click here to learn more about the Community Foundation for Delta County.
