MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – A popular bakery in Marquette is preparing for their busiest day of the year. Huron Mountain Bakery has been busy baking approximately 15,000 paczki since 3 a.m. to prepare for the holiday.
“Fat Tuesday is our busiest day of the year,” said Rachel Freeman, the Assistant General Manager. “I think the most we’ve made is about 18,000, or 19,000. Usually the later that it is, the more that we make, and the earlier, the less that we make.”
Fat Tuesday marks last day before the Lenten season begins.
Around 40 employees at the bakery have been working in shifts to make enough for the holiday for both the marquette and the ishpeming locations, but their prep for the holiday started well before Monday.
“To get a lot of our stuff we have to order way ahead of time through out vendors,” said Freeman. “That way we have all the flour that we need, all the sugar, all the eggs. Everything. There’s so much more that goes into these than just regular donuts.”
The bakery is no longer accepting preorders for the paczki, but will have plenty available on a first come, first serve basis tomorrow from 6 a-m until 7 p-m.
