Emergency supplies to keep while driving in the winter

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – As the freezing temperatures continue to swarm the UP, police are reminding those driving to bring the winter essentials. On long road trips throughout the rural UP, winter driving can be dangerous. Checking tire pressure, bringing extra clothes, and even a shovel and some cat litter can help get the car unstuck.

Marquette County Sheriff commented that these emergency items can sometimes be overlooked, however, they make all the difference in a situation where you might be stuck in a remote area of the U.P. or broken down.

“Sometimes things happen you hit a deer and you’re on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere, you better have the clothing and be prepared for a couple of hours because the UP is as everyone knows it’s a large area, very dense and not populated and sometimes it takes hours to see people or get help,” commented Marquette County Sheriff Greg Zhyburt.

The Sheriff also notes that there are fewer cell towers on some roads, and bringing flares or a bright flashlight can help signal down help.
