MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Fire and Police Departments of Escanaba and Marquette are headed to local stores to compete in their annual Red Kettle Challenge!
These two department have been hashing it out for about 5 years now, ringing the bell for the Salvation Army to see who can raise the most money, in a short amount of time. all to keep the Salvation Army, thrift section and pantry up and running.
“Every year it gets a little more competitive but we have a really good time,” Greg Zyburt, Marquette County Sherriff. “And we raise sometimes somewhere between three to five thousand dollars, just in a three hour period.”
Members from both the Escanaba and Marquette Fire and Police Departments will be stationed outside of many storefront locations TODAY December 15th from 4-7pm. Escanaba locations include Elmer’s and Walmart, while Marquette locations include Walmart, Super One, Walgreens, Jubilee, Tadychs Marketplace, and Lafaro’s Marketplace in Harvey.
Before being collected, the money is first counted up to see who the winner of the Red Kettle Challenge is, and who get’s the bragging rights for a whole year.
“The salvation army does a lot for the people in our community,” says Kevin Serkowski Firefighter/ Paramedic. “So any donations that you guys give is almost like us helping them, you’re also helping them as well.”
