HOUGHTON, Mich. – Elevator replacement work on the US-41/M-26 Portage Lake Lift Bridge between the cities of Houghton and Hancock will require lane closures and a pedestrian detour on the bridge.
Beginning Tuesday, Sept. 26, the northbound outside lane on the bridge will be intermittently closed to vehicle traffic except between 4 and 6 p.m., the peak traffic period. The northbound sidewalk will be closed with a posted pedestrian detour beginning Monday, Oct. 2. The closures are expected to end Nov. 15.
The work is part of the $4.3 million Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) investment to replace bridge elevators and install false decking under one bridge span. The decking work was completed earlier this year.
This repair project will help ensure continued safe and reliable operation of the bridge.
