2023 Marji Gesick race tests participants limits

ISHPEMING, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Marji Gesick has been called the hardest single day mountain bike race in America and this year’s event lived up to the race’s reputation.

Over 1,100 people hit the trails Saturday into Sunday to compete in the 2023 Marji Gesick race. Participants were able to ride or walk the course, with the option of completing a 100 miles, 50 miles or the Mini Marji event.

“We have kids out here alone, kids out here with their parents, parents out here alone, it’s a transformational experience for people,” remarked Todd Poquette, the Director of Adventure at the 906 Adventure Team, the company that runs the race.

The race is designed to be as challenging as possible, racers go through grueling elevation changes and the harshest environments the U.P has to offer. Racers must use handheld GPS devices and knowledge of the trails to navigate their way through the unmarked course.

“I had good training for that, but still it was really tough,” added Dirk Bruxvoort, a rider who competed in the 50 mile race.

The race is as much a mental challenge as it is a physical one. Participants train for months before hitting the trail. but for many of the racers the celebration once crossing the finish line makes the difficult task worth it.

“I envisioned it all week, just crossing the finish line and seeing my wife and kiddo, I couldn’t ask for anything more, I am on cloud nine,” commented Alex Schoen, a rider who was competing in his first Marji Gesick.

To complete a challenge like the Marji Gesick it takes more than just a passionate runner or biker. Support crews help to supply equipment and food and hydration along the route. There is advanced logistical planning and necessary steps that have to be taken along the way to ensure a rider’s safety. Many previous riders and family members of those participating will even set up stations along the way to hand out candy, water and a whole lot of energy bars.

“When you see people come together for a common cause, and that is getting to the finish line, it is just a beautiful thing to watch,” said Poquette.

The Marji Gesick is put on by the 906 Adventure Team, the organization sponsors a number of races and outdoor oriented events throughout the year.
