MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – On Thursday, the City of Marquette, the Northern Foundation, and the demolition company Adamo Group held a public information meeting, giving the community an update on the estimated 166-million-dollar redevelopment project.
Demolition for the project is still in the environmental phase, removing asbestos, light bulbs, batteries, and other universal waste from the building. The Adamo group is currently working on the west building and the 81 building and is expected to start structural demolition in early October.
“Once the buildings are down the materials are being shifted off-site and then once we get enough area opened up we’ll be able to start There’ll be the low-grade demo which is removing all the concrete and foundations and that,” commented Adamo Group Senior Project Manager Jeff Green.
Adamo Group explained to the community that they will also assume all snow removal responsibility on College Ave. as it will remain a closed road until demolition is complete. The entire demolition is scheduled to be completed around January 2024. At the public session today, officials said up to 80-90 percent of materials are gonna be repurposed or recycled.
“Northern Michigan Univerity’s interest in this project is really focused on what’s possible for beneficial reuse of the site and we know that there’s a need for housing across the spectrum there’s potential for higher density housing single-family housing and potentially senior living was identified as another need,” said Executive Dir. of Business Engagement David Nyberg.
