KINGSFORD, Mich. (WZMQ) – In Dickinson County, the Breitung Township School District has announced a bond proposal set for the upcoming November 7th election, aimed at enhancing school facilities.
During last week’s “Meet the Flivvers” athletic event, School Superintendent David Holmes addressed the public, urging the community to participate in the upcoming election.
Holmes highlighted the benefits of the new school bond, which would include additional classrooms, including a 6-7 classroom pod at Woodland Elementary, relocation of the Woodland Office to improve safety and access, an additional gym at the elementary level, and improved facilities for the middle school band.
“There’s typically a hundred kids in our high school band, and a great deal of students in our middle school band as well. So we’re looking at creating an independent band room for the middle school students, which will also help with storage. And we’re looking at creating a community facility, a multi-purpose community facility, right in this field,” echoed Superintendent Holmes from the Flivver football stadium.
He further mentioned that the community facility would be similar to the one recently constructed in Negaunee, providing community access for various activities including walking, tennis, and pickleball.
Holmes emphasized, “But it also serves as a sports practice facility for our students. We have multiple youth programs around the community that are dying for space,” highlighting the school district’s growth in varsity sports participation over the years. To put it in perspective, 25 years ago there were 16 varsity sports at the district, whereas now there are 23 varsity sports with increasing participation among its students.
According to a press release sent to news organizations on August 14th, the estimated annual cost for an average household in Kingsford or Breitung Township would be $343. This amount would be slightly lower for those eligible for the Homestead Tax Credit or for those who qualify for senior citizen tax credits.
“We’re a growing district. We have a lot of things going really well right now. We just cracked over 2,000 students again this year. Space and activities certainly are things that we need. We’ll share more in the coming months with you about a bond election, which will be on November 7th. I highly encourage you all to be active and get out and vote,” Holmes stated, underscoring the bond’s focus on safety and security measures.
The total amount to be invested in the bond is 34.5 million dollars, with a millage rate of 4.6 mills for a total of 25 years and the millage rate retiring at 4.1 mills.
