MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – Friday morning, Marquette City Planner Dave Stensaas and Marquette Historian Dan Truckey held a ‘Cultural conversation’, discussing the history of the shoreline developments in Marquette.
Community members of Marquette gathered together around the Father Marquette Statue, talking about the downtown shoreline and how looking back on history is an important factor in moving forward.
Lake Superior access wasn’t always available and now having an abundance of it, the city planner noted that this is just another way to enjoy the UP culture. “That’s one of the reasons that Marquette is so attractive I mean there’s just so much public access and to the biggest freshwater lake in North America it’s just a fantastic place at least when there’s not ice and snow on the ground,” said City Planner Dave Stensaas.
The city planner continued “there was no access where we’re standing now to the lakeshore for the average person this was all an industrial zone the fact that now almost more than half of the shoreline in the city of Marquette is city parks, it’s just an amazing asset,” continued Stensaas.
