Sands Township, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Preserve LLC purchased the land that will be The Kona Hills campground along US 41, back in 2020. Last week, Sands Township approved its special use permit, allowing them to move forward with site planning, permits, and construction.
Kona Hills, named after the rock formation it occupies, will be a 50 site campground to start out. The founders of the project started off in real estate in the Marquette area. One of the co-founders Jeremy Johnson says, when inflation started to impact housing prices, they wanted to find another way to scale their business without contributing to housing issues.
“This area, you know, we’re right across from lake superior,” Johnson says, “there’s a lot of geological and anthropological history here, so being able to open it up in a sustainable way was kind of the larger goal of the project.
Founders of the campgrounds say there still a lot left to do this summer, but hope to be open to campers for the summer of 2024…
