Northern Michigan holds Safetalk Suicide Prevention training

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – Northern Michigan held a safe talk exercise on April 6th, a national training that teaches students and community members about suicide prevention. Thursday’s training offered entry-level knowledge of preventative measures and techniques that may assist those facing internal struggles.

Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, or SAMHSA, sponsored Thursday’s training exercise, giving the MDHHS’s Children’s Services Agency more opportunities to

Northern Michigan University’s social work program has said that they’ve seen an increase in suicides among youth and this training is about creating more conversation about how to prevent suicide. “I think increasing the awareness and increasing some skills and knowledge in people like the folks that we have in this training is going to increase the likely hood that we can see people’s pain and we can provide some relief for the pain,” said Northern Michigan MSW Program Director Sarah Carlson.

Northern Michigan says they will be hosting more training in the future.
